Right: The same abdomen, shaped by liposuction
After a successful liposuction surgery, the treated area will be smooth and symmetrical and have a leaner, tighter appearance.
Liposuction (aka lipoplasty or liposculpture) is tops on Americans’ list of favorite surgical procedures, with roughly 300,000 surgeries performed each year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. During liposuction, doctors insert a pen-like device (called a cannula) into a patient’s trouble spot and then use vacuum pressure to suck away the fat. Surgeons can perform liposuction on a variety of body parts, including the abdomen, legs, arms, back, neck and face. The potential complications associated with liposuction include infection, punctured organs and even death.
