Sticking to a healthy-eating game plan isn’t easy to begin with, but a few subversive forces make it infinitely trickier. We’ve got top nutritionists’ secrets for stopping them in their tracks!

The Diet Derailer: Your food-vacuum boyfriend

The Fix: Subtly take control

It’s so unfair that women can’t eat like guys without gaining weight, but men’s need for mega-calories (and their overdrive metabolisms) is sadly a fact of life. Whether you’re cooking in or ordering out, stealthily taking control of the situation will do wonders for keeping your diet intact. “My boyfriend has a heavy hand with olive oil—some is healthy, but his portion is beyond a normal serving,” admits Stephanie Middleberg, a registered dietician at Nu-Train in New York City. So instead of fighting over the bottle, Middleberg decided to beat him home and do the cooking herself. “He was happy because he thought I was doing the work for him, but I get the satisfaction of knowing what’s in my food when we sit down to eat.” When her boyfriend does cook, Middleberg makes sure to put the olive oil in a spray bottle to trick her guy into using less. On nights when you and your guy order in, instead of bringing the delivery bag right to the table, take it to the kitchen first, suggests Middleberg. Throw away the extra bread or fortune cookies and put half of the food on your plate and the other half in your fridge for lunch the next day. “Most take-out meals can easily feed two!” she says. And don’t snack with your guy while you’re waiting for the food to arrive—or else you’ll end up eating two meals instead of one.

Food temptations bombard us all every day.  But, if you eat healthy snacks and meals that are high protein and low-carb, you'll find that those diet disasters will be easier to avoid.  It's not a bad thing to "graze" on food all day, as long as you're eating foods that don't contain a bunch of useless sugars and carbs.  If you want some tips on how to stick to a healthy and low-carb diet, check out this article: Benefits of a Low-Carb Diet & 5 Tips to Stick With It

The biggest derailer of successful weight-loss, is following some of the crazy fads or gimmicks advertised daily, and the following is one of the biggest lies.

Have you seen those ads that claim that you can lose one pound a day if you obey their rule? Well, unless you take a knife and start cutting off body parts, it's physiologically impossible to lose one pound of fat per day. In fact, most people can only drop one pound of fat per week when all cylinders are firing.

Of course, you might be able to drop one pound of water weight in a day doing things that I would not recommend, but soon after re-hydrating (drinking fluids)that pound magically reappears.

So, why can't the average human being lose one pound of fat per day? Because it takes the oxidation (burning) of approximately 3500 extra calories to burn that much fat. However, even if you could expend 3500 extra calories in one day, not all of the fuel being burned is fat. Glucose (sugar) and amino acids (proteins) are also oxidized. The body can breakdown muscle to liberate specific amino acids for this purpose via cortisol (adrenal hormone).

Let me put this into perspective - An individual weighing 170 pounds walking 4 mph, for 9 hours without stopping, would burn approximately 3580 calories. Of course, it is ridiculous to think that anyone could or even would attempt this, but if they did - to reiterate - fat would not be the only fuel burned as explained above.

The bottom line: Don't be fooled by bogus claims, and don't focus on how much weight you can lose in a day. Rather, focus on making smart choices and eating a well-balanced diet, and exercising on a regular basis. Focus on becoming healthy and lean, and body fat will drop as a consequence.

My biggest derailer is the co-worker who though skinny loves to bake and is constantly bringing in "treats" for us all.  She makes this snickerdoodle brownie that is chocolate and peanut butter with chips and ooey gooey wonderfulness that is hard to turn down.  I never see her eating any...and I think she wants the rest of us porky!

I find what helps me the most is not having the first taste, being full and having some kind of low calorie treat in my drawer.  After struggling over the years to lose weight and finally having lost over 30 pounds, I am not going to let some snickerdoodles get between me and my weight loss achievement.

In general I avoid diet foods, diet soda and processed food and keep it simple and walk every day.  I eat a high fiber diet based on whole grains, flax, veggies, fruit and lean protein and drink water (with a lemon wedge). My favorite high fiber food is flax.  I have fitflax  http://www.fitflax.com  every morning in greek yogurt.  FitFlax is a golden roasted flax and chia seeds blend that is low carb/low cal and FILLING. I have my power breakfast, and I am full, have tons of energy and am able to make better food choices the rest

of the day.  Fitflax tastes nutty (kinda like peanut butter) and I sometimes just eat straight from the bag.  It does not need to be ground so it is convenient.

I still have more weight to lose but I love what I am eating and am no longer the "fat" girl with the pretty curly hair.

I love all the diets that people get yanked into that fail.I made up my own diet and have lost a size and a half in just two weeks. It is real simple clear your head and tell yourself you are not being held hostage by the wrong foods and the amount and at which time you eat them. Then try to balance it out and just go day by day.I started out by having two soy protein drinks at 1 net carb,110 calories ea. loaded with vitamins breakfast and lunch. Then an egg drop soup a lil after lunch. Then by 5pm I would go to favourite chinese takeout and order a pint of chicken/brocoli with nothing on it.I would take just a dash of soy sauce and a lil pepper add it and by the time I was finished after my body was use to the routine I was full.I also would switch off the chicken and brocoli with chicken /snow peas or anything on menu minus the heavy sauces.I also take supplements.I take a cranberry pill and a 3,6,9 high omega combination flax/fish oil and a gelatin pill too in morning(to protect myself). Then at nightime I take a prenatal tablet to avoid getting run down along with a vitamin d -3 pill.I feel really good have not gotten sick and the weight is coming right off and I am not craving the bad food.My hair is thicker and I have alot of energy. If you cannot afford chinese takeout you can make all that yourself.Hope you all have good luck, also I have a giant cup of tea formulated with red antioxidants.I guess the best reward is when my guy hugs me he cannot stop and he just lights up to see the old me.I never really showed being obese
I carried around 226 pounds and now weigh a lil under 200 .My advise buy some smaller clothes and look at them everyday.

Dieting can take many detours along the road to weight lose. My weight has fluctuated through the years especially around having my two kids. The two best things that have kept my diet stable is using a diet generator and walking everyday. The diet generator creates meal plans for my family and me each week. Walking has kept the weight off.

I enjoy listening to other's experiences with their diets and what makes them fail. I HATE how people pop in advertisements for thing even dating on these blogs knowing they couldnt really care a less about our struggle, that many of them are trying to sell some thing..sigh..
