Does anyone grasp the concept that weight and volume are not synonymous? I thought the article was reasonably well-written and informative. Folks, please remember no one is infallible, and its just information. Take it or leave it. No one is forcing you to read internet health articles. In fact, if you are so concerned about your weight and health, consult your physician.

Some of this I agree with and some I don't.  Fresh is always better than canned, and dude if you think that yo-yo dieting doesn't have an unhealthy effect on your body I challenge you to do it for yourself for the next let's say 10 years and see what it does to your body.  We would all do well to remember that all advice isn't good advice even if it comes from Redbook!

In my experience, one of the biggest mistakes most overweight individuals make is focusing on weight-loss as their goal. Doing so promotes the "I will try anything to lose weight mentality," and this leads to fad dieting, taking hyped up supplements,  drinking the latest magic berry drink or taking herbal appetite suppressants - all of which fail miserably, always.

I tell my patients to change their focus from losing weight to becoming healthy and fit through making positive lifestyle changes including diet, supplementation and fitness. To say that eating canned vegetables is the same as fresh is ridiculous.  Canned food is full of preservatives, i.e. SALT.  Salt will make you retain water and is bad for your blood pressure.  Stick to fresh or frozen.

Also, losing weight is easy.  I've lost a lot of weight several times.  The trouble is, I lose the same weight and after time gain it back, plus more.  Keeping the weight off is the hard part.  you need to come up with a meal and exercise plan that you can maintain for the rest of your life, and that's not easy.  And weight loss with problems like diabetes and heart disease is even harder as the foods that you can eat are restricted even more.  Also, no matter what some will say, part of it is in the genes.  I know thin people who stuff themselves with food, food that is full of fat and cholesterol, and they never gain a pound.  I also know heavy people who eat very little and still don't lose weight.  Don't judge people by their weight.  Most fat people I know have more knowledge about nutrition than thin people do.  Its just the luck of the draw.

I would guess there is so much controversy on this subject because of the holiday season. We all know we are obligated to eat more than we should or the host will be insulted. And during the rest of the year, what's up with all the buffets and all-you-can-eat restaurants? I bet there is a mindset in China, that to be successful, they need to move to the USA and open a buffet, "where the fat peopo are".

I am afraid I am a victim of both. Just by cutting out the buffets (and pizza), and eating in moderation, I was able to lose 20 pounds. It has taken a while, and this is the third time in my life I have done it. (I am 48). So we will see what happens.

Basically just eat a tiny bit less.  If you decrease consumption by a scant 250 calories a day you'll lose 2 pounds a month.  A can of soda has 150 calories so switch to diet soda (or better yet water) and you're over half way there.  Perhaps use a little less butter or mayo and you're done!  Works like a charm.

A pound is 3500 calories..... to lose it, burn off more than you take in.  It is that simple, so stop whining and burn it off.  Drop 300 calories a day off of your daily intake and you'll lose over a pound every 12 days !  But who wants to work for it?  No one.

its just an article so i dont know why people insist upon using this to advertise fake products and hate on people who are fat. The only thing I agree with though is that being fat is a persons own fault unless they have an overeating disorder which can be treated. but thats the thing everyones eating habits start when they are young so parents need to start feeding their kids better foods and better drinks too because no one realizes how much soda and juice count as calories and not to mention sugar. theres plenty of better alternatives and of course water! plus kids need exercise, everyone knows kids today arent as active as kids from a few decades ago. get them outside on a nice day to go play or sign up them for sports or something whatever you gotta do. you will carry these healthy tips into adulthood...so make sure you eat better, get active and try not to worry so much. yes weight loss is hard but if you strive to make it better you will re learn yourself into eating better. I've lost 45lbs it wasnt easy and im still working on losing more. I still get to eat out too. it is hard with portion sizes being out of control and some foods being so big in calories it should be illegal.
oh and heres how the genetic thing goes for those who want in...
theres no such thing as a "fat gene" what it is, is that theres certain genes you have that indicate your metabolism speed and where your fat is stored hence the reason alot of people in the same family get fat in the same areas like the tummy or theighs. Also frame size and height do play a role as well. Also if you look at any overweight family you will find their eating habits are very simliar because like i said earlier you learn alot of eating habits when you are young. Because of this no one in the family realizes the need to change any of the diet and everyone grows up overweight. You can see a difference between the way healthier families eat and overweight families. I think alot of it stems from people that came from families where eating more was fine because they burned it off playing outside or at work so they were still slender anyways but todays children and adults dont need as much food because they arent as active.
I think we need to downsize portions and for at risk children and families of becoming overweight we should offer nutrition/fitness classes to help everyone gain control.
