Lose More Long Term

Now that you've lost some weight, how do you keep it off—and lose some more?

By Martica Heaner, M.A., M.Ed., for MSN Health & Fitness

To lose weight—or keep it off—long term, continue to write down what you eat, make good food choices and stay active every day. But you also need to start planning how you'll continue this healthier lifestyle into your future.

The plan for Week 5—and beyond:

Assess your 'before' and 'after.' Go back and review your original Baseline Diet Diary, where you tracked your previous eating and activity patterns. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Has your new lifestyle dramatically changed? If so, will it be impossible to keep it up?
  • Does this new lifestyle look similar to your previous lifestyle, with tweaks that improve eating habits and raise activity level? If so, have these lifestyle changes produced satisfactory results?
  • When you look back on what you used to eat, does it entice you back? Or do you feel a little repulsed by all the fried foods and the enormous portions?
  • Is exercise becoming a regular part of your day?
  • Is it easier for you to make time for fitness sessions?

Noticing and assessing the changes you've made—and determining how easy (or not) it will be to maintain them—will help you shape your lifestyle going forward. You'll be able to know which approaches to better eating and regular exercise are effective for you. Read this week's Eat Smart tips.

Keep on tracking. Don't expect to eat perfectly and exercise intensely every day for the rest of your life. You'll have some days where you slack off on workouts, or eat or drink too much. Just don't allow a slip-up to mess you up for good. Be consistent. Track your eating and exercise habits on My Wellness Center.

Move every day and try new forms of exercise. For most people, the only way to keep the weight off is to exercise almost every day of the week. Devise strategies so you enjoy it and can stick with it! It's natural for your motivation to wax and wane over time. So go with the flow. (See "Walk the Fat Off" to the right.) If walking or your gym routine suddenly feels tedious, find something else to do. You may surprise yourself and discover a new obsession, like biking or a rock-climbing gym. The past weeks have been the kickoff to the rest of your life. You know what it takes to feel better and look better. The challenge is not only doing it, but staying motivated. So find ways to stay inspired and on track. You can do it!

I weighed 209lbs 2 years ago and started walking to work. I also gave up potatoe chips..my downfall and started eating healthier. Slowly but surely the weight started to drop off and now after 2 years, I weigh 154 lbs and can fit into my daughter-in-laws clothes...size 8. I never imagined I could have accomplished this but am extremely proud of my accomplishments. I would encourage anyone to take small steps and don't give up on yourself...it is possible...good luck to everyone!!

Ok, so I'm gonna be 28 in November, I have 3 girls, my youngest being 8 months. I am 5'4 and I weight 175lbs. For those of you who say you don't gain weight by having children, you are full of it. ;) It's a must to gain at least 25lbs to have a healthy pregnancy, and you only lose the baby weight (7 or 8 lbs) depending on your babies size. And breastfeeding does help, but not too much. However it's not putting blame on our children, but carrying the weight bearing the children. So its up to us to lose the weight we put on in order to have a healthy child!!! Well, I started dieting in June, lost 10 lbs, by mid August, then gained back 5lbs. So I'm still down 5 lbs, but overall I should be at about 130lbs to 135lbs to be healthy for my size. So I have to lose at least 35-40lbs... Wish me luck... I quit drinking sodas and stopped snacking on sweets, I work out 3-4 times a week for at least 30-45 minutes each workout. I eat smaller meals, I snack more healthier, and I'm gonna step up my workouts... So I guess what I'm saying is, you have to really want it in order for it to work. And want it for yourself, not for anyone else. Good luck to you all!!! I'll let you know my progress in a few weeks...

Hello everyone, here are my little tibits of advice. I am 5 foot 4 and recently went from 202 down to 155. I worked out for over 1 year, hard on the treadmill and doing weights, never losing a pound. So I started writing in a notebook what I was eating, measuring my food, etc. And trying my hardest to stay under 1500 calories. Within the first week I had lost 3 pounds. I truly believe its 80 percent what you eat! Eat good and work out for enjoyment, once those pounds come off you can start working out harder. I recently completed 2 5ks. And I am now running 5 miles daily, six times a week!

I heard a fitness expert state on TV once that when you are doing cardio, if you can hold a conversation with the person next to you, then you are not working hard enough to get the full benefit of the workout.  I follow this as a rule of thumb when on the treadmill or elliptical.

I have been reading this site and I plan on starting tomorrow. I sure do need

the support and I am 5/1 and weigh 236, I have been staying around this for the last 3-4 years now. I don't over eat, and I don't excercise. Maybe the things I eat are not the right

choices but after reading this site I plan on starting a walking program with my daughter

in the morning. Please wish me luck.

Week 5//Lose More Long Term

Week 5: Each day this week, perform the recommended activity. Modify the routine if needed. On days with two routines, you can do them separately or combine them into one workout.

If you are using a pedometer, remember to increase your end-of-day step total by the recommended number. This will encourage you be more active all day long, not just during your workouts.

Download the Regular Walker routine (pdf).
