I don't know what you do when you're feeling frustrated, bored or upset, but a lot of women eat. Sure, a few cookies now and then aren't going to kill you, but there are so many better ways to take care of yourself!

We are always willing to justify eating crap by saying, "I had a rough day. I deserve this." Deserve what? Heart disease? Cellulite? Diabetes? Come on! Would you reward your loved ones this way? I bet not. What do I do to make myself feel better?

1. Whenever I am upset I call my best friend for validation. Just having someone listen allows me to vent and get some of those toxic angry feelings out of my body instead of me stuffing them back down with food.

2. I go visit my horse, because spending time with him calms me down. Don't have a dog, cat, bird, fish, horse, cow, any animal? Go to the park and watch the squirrels!

3. I'll go on line and look for vintage shirts on e-bay, look for something new to get for my motorcycle, or download some new workout music from iTunes.

4. I pamper myself like I would a child—tuck myself into bed and watch my favorite movies!

Ask yourself: What is it that you like to do, need to do?

Now I want you to nurture yourself this way—and I am willing to bet that the more you treat yourself like this the less likely you will be to overeat for emotional reasons.

So, the next time you have had a hard day and you are about to order up a pizza, take a breath and ask yourself: What is it that you like to do, need to do? Then stop and try that instead.

Watching the TV show "The Biggest Loser" has helped me to remember to eat better, get  exercise as possible, and reduce calorie intake.   I've had some sick days to work through so in the meantime I read others' weight loss stories and try to stay on track.    Sipping water through the day helps to reduce excess hunger most of the time.    For those who have trouble with regular exercise equipment, it seems like swimming pool workouts are helpful.

I've been in the trenches with my overweight and obese patients for over 15-years. I've seen their joy when things are going right and felt their anguish when they are not. I have learned that true motivation comes from somewhere deep inside that can only be accessed by the individual - not me, Richard Simmons or anyone else. Of course, outside influences and pep talks help, but only for a very brief period of time. Adhering to a good lifestyle program and being accountable to yourself and to someone you can trust, is key in achieving overall success. Finally, changing focus from weight-loss to being healthy and fit is paramount to a healthier and happier you - and this is motivating.

I have read some of your comments. I find them to be encouraging. In the past I have had a lot of physical problems. My age and metabolism could be my biggest obstacles that I have to over come . People will say," it is never too late to begin an exercise program". This I  believe is true. There is no secret bullet to losing weight. I think a consistent effort with support from friends is very important. Everyone keep up your fine efforts .

Jhet-Enjoyed the blog-the Mountain Dew part hit home for me. Not only is soda awful for the midsection it's also bad for your teeth, which I found out first hand.

I think that your tips are great! I came up with the excel spread sheet idea and made one just yesterday, so it's pretty cool to see that it's working for someone else :)

I am about 90lbs over wieght, but the amazing thing is that the tools and tactics that we use are the same. Good luck with your continued sucess!

I have been overweight most of my life.  It's been a vicious cycle of self loathing and doubt that I was in. I have been a victim of my own negativity, but since I recently started working out and eating healthy it has changed my attitude. I was a model junk food junkie, not to mention that I am so picky! I ate processed foods every meal of the day and hardly ever ate fruits or veggies. THE GOOD NEWS IS-I HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE ALL OF MY BAD HABITS AND SO DO YOU! I know it's hard, it is a huge struggle, but I've found that the more I exercise and healthier I eat the more I am encouraged. My recommendations would be to find exercises that you enjoy: hiking, roller skating, walking, swimming...then you will be more likely to stick with it. I'm starting to write down my meals and that helps too. Also, I'm starting to enjoy the science behind losing weight. It's all about the formulas. Less intake, more exercise. I tailor my meals around the way my body works-I'm a slow (very slow) oxidizer and having Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (something I bet a lot of us ladies have in common) I am insulin resistant. Realizing these things has given me the power to work with my body. Whew, I know this was long, but I think talking is another big part of my (future) success. Thanks for listening and good luck.

Darlene M:  If you wait for the motivation you will never get there.  JUST DO IT !  Focus, research, look for a food plan and exercise plan that you can live with.  DO IT -because you DESERVE IT ! Get started and the motivation to continue and to be successfull will come!!! DO IT - because you have set a goal and you ARE going to reach it.  Find support people to encourage you.  You can do this, you will do this - because this is your choice, this is your goal, this is your life!!!

Well I had a bad winter, had breast cancer, and I have
been working out since I finished my treatment:
am doing yoga, and also treadmill and hired PT
to learn how to use the gym near my home.  Now
I work out 2 hours a day, and still keep the fridge full
of healthy food and have two jobs.... so if I CAN DO IT,
so can you....   find support, make a calender, and
do journaling/meditations to stay calm.... instead of eating!
Have a great class reunion!
