Some parents reportedly exposing healthy kids to those already sick with the H1N1 flu.

THURSDAY, Oct. 22 (HealthDay News) -- While most people are doing all they can to avoid the swine flu, some groups of people are said to be actively seeking it out.

These are parents who are reportedly arranging swine flu "parties" -- similar to chicken pox or measles parties -- so their healthy children can be exposed to the virus through kids who are already sick with the H1N1 flu.

Health experts theorize that the rationale may be to give a child the swine flu while it's still relatively mild, before it mutates into something more virulent. But, so far, all indications point to the H1N1 virus staying as mild to moderate as when it first appeared in the spring.

Or perhaps parents think that the disease is somehow better than unknown side effects associated with the H1N1 vaccine. But, there appear to be no untoward side effects associated with the shot other than redness, tenderness and swelling at the injection site, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But health experts are universal in their condemnation of the practice of swine flu parties.

"Any time you willingly subject your children to an infectious disease, you run the risk of all sorts of complications," said Dr. Tamara Kuittinen, an emergency medicine physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "There's always a risk of giving them more than you bargained for. It may be dangerous."

Added Dr. Robert Frenck, a professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital: "It's not anything I would advocate for swine flu or any flu. Most of the time the flu is a mild illness, but it can be severe. People die from H1N1 and from the regular flu."

Swine flu parties could prove particularly risky because the H1N1 flu, unlike seasonal flu, tends to target children and young adults. According to data collected by the CDC from 28 states from Sept. 1 to Oct. 10, nearly 24 percent of deaths were among people under age 25, about 65 percent of deaths were among those 25 to 64, and only 11.6 percent of the deaths were among people aged 65 and older.

During the same six-week period, 27 states reported 4,958 people hospitalized with H1N1 swine flu, and more than half -- 53 percent -- were under the age of 25.

Despite questions in some quarters about the safety of the H1N1 vaccine now being rolled out, the shot is actually the best way to protect your child against the swine flu, said Dr. Nathan Litman, director of pediatrics and chief of pediatric infectious diseases at The Children's Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, in New York City.

"It should totally prevent them from acquiring [H1N1] influenza and, if they do get sick, they would have a milder illness," he said.

Vaccination will also prevent others from falling ill: Children who contract the swine flu at a party not only run the risk of getting sick themselves, they can also pass it on to others who might be at greater risk of complications, Litman added.

"When you have a good match between the vaccine and the virus circulating, you have 90 percent or more protection against the disease," Frenck said.

While I do not agree with exposing children on purpose to any flu, I think parents should have the right to not vaccinate.  The government should not have the right to insist that you vaccinate your child.  There are some serious side affects to these vaccines. They may not seriously affect everyone, but neith does the flu.

And where are all you social service loving fools when your government feeds 50 tons of recalled tainted poisoned meat to your kids grandkids in school lunches and recalled peanut butter knowingly also served . Does anyone out there give a fricken hoot about kids safety , health then hmmmm don't think so .So if our leaders in these agencies allow this how can we trust them and not just trust them but put them above our own common sense and instinct and love of the flesh of our flesh get real!! God did not create swine flu man did here in the good ole USA the sooner you absorb that truth the sooner you may come out of your comas .

Exactly given to soldiers as it was in 1918 right here in the good old USA and then they dug up victims of 1918 flu 50 years ago and extracted the virus and recreated it resurrected it and it ever so conveniently made it's way into the seasonal flu vaccine just weeks before the reported outbreak in Mexico ! Although the pharmaceutical company said it was a terrible mistake quality control in European countries found the live swine flu virus in the seasonal flu vaccines . And if you believe this was accidental then you should buy the brooklyn bridge oh oops that was dumb because the bridge is probably for sale like everything else our capital buildings , federal buildings etc......

Well if tobacco was not deliberately poisoned it might not be so bad. Not that I would smoke it but many other countries like Japan for instance have very high numbers of smokers but maintain low cancer rates good food no poison chemicals on tobacco or food products . People have been smoking for centuries without all of these complications heart disease , lung cancer etc....

This swine flu/H1N1 (whatever they decide to call it)  is very confusing.  I am no sure whether to vaccinate my kids or not.  You turn on the national evening news and then they show children in hospital beds with breathing machines and I watch that and I get scared for my own children.  Then I hear or watch other shows with conflicting information not to get the vaccine because of side effects and then that scares me as well.  Or I hear the virus is mild, so why vaccinate.  I am confused.

to NotMeThisTime, God created our bodies internal temp, when infected with disease, not to go above 105, this is your bodies way of getting rid of bacteria/viruses in its system.  Seizures happen not because of a high temp, but because the body's temp rises very rapidly.  The only time your body temp will go above 105 is from external factors, i.e. hot tub, heat exposure  My daughter is the queen of high temps, 103-104, I let her sleep them off and she wakes up right at rain, she has not been sick in her 2 1/2 years on this planet and she has never once had a seizure.

God created our bodies to be self healing if we take care of it.  The US has a terrible diet, its like sticking diesel fuel in our minivans, that's why they don't work right.  Our bodies do not need vaccines, doctors, or intervention, they need quality, organic, live foods to feed a living body.

Children need three flu shots this season, that is three doses of mercury, which normally cause a school shut down if there is a spill, where is our common sense.  The Amish community doesn't have Autism because they do not vaccinate their children.  When will we learn and stop poisoning ourselves and our children.

The doctor in the article who said that a vaccine is the best way to gain immunity is an idiot and better go back to physiology 101 so he can learn how the immune system actually works.  He said it all, "the vaccine should" protect you, but the truth is that they don't.  If you get the disease itself then you have protection from it.
