Muscle up your immunity

Staying healthy isn't just about using hand sanitizer and avoiding coughing co-workers. It turns out some pretty surprising daily habits—like how you fight with your husband or whether you stay up late for Letterman—can impact how well your body fends off colds, flu and other pesky bugs. Here's a list of science-backed tips to add to your stay-healthy arsenal today.

1. You avoid the water cooler

Friendship may be Miracle-Gro for your immune system.

Research shows that the fewer human connections we have at home, at work, and in the community, the likelier we are to get sick, flood our brains with anxiety-causing chemicals, and live shorter lives than our more sociable peers. In one study, researchers who monitored 276 people between the ages of 18 and 55 found that those who had 6 or more connections were 4 times better at fighting off the viruses that cause colds than those with fewer friends.

What to do: Don't let a jam-packed workday or hectic schedule get in the way of your friendships. Stop by a co-worker's office for a quick Monday morning catch-up, or e-mail or text your friends at night to stay in touch when you're too busy for phone calls.

What is the issue today?
Tuesday, July 28, 2009 10:24:01 AM

wow...not sure I have ever seen so many "comments removed" on a topic.  I hope it is due to my comment about second-hand smoke (I figured that would invite some fire).  I can try to back it up with real scientific research I have read if anybody is interested.  I think most of the data comes from the EPA report on the subject, probably old now but I haven't seen anything recently to refute that report.

BTW, the tobacco industry has to stay "mum" on the issue and basically bow to the federal government's (Clinton...so I guess cigars are ok) "agenda" on the topic.  The industry's stance was one of the charges in the federal lawsuit that threatened their very existence so I guess it was easier to simply agree.

You are full of ****. You are trying to excuse your smoking.

why do people continue to blame second-hand smoke for everything?  The stats only get to the numbers they do because the "researchers" had to fiddle with well-established statistical methods to achieve their goals.  Second-hand is mostly water vapor.  Asthma in children is more related to other factors (check the incidence as Mom's education level goes up) probably more indicating overall cleanliness of the house.

I'll finish and let the fighting begin!

"The 10 most Useless Body Parts"  You've got to be kidding!!!  The individual that wrote this obviously knows nothing about nutrition and how important the gall bladder is, plus the article above that says they are just now LEARNING what the appendix DOES.  And Sinuses not important?  Somebody needs to study before they write.

Dr. Mayer Eisenstein stated that the Lancet came out recently identifying a purpose of the appendix as a "warehouse" for good bacteria found in your system.  So that which we thought were "extra parts" are now being found out as essential for optimal health.

I can't believe the foods we eat were not the first point in this presentation! We are what we eat. It is impossible to avoid most of the situations outlined in this presentation. However, what can be done to build up the immune system on a physiological and biochemical level??? Not even addressed. Sure sleep and stress management are important, but vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats are equally as important. In fact, those factors have a cause and effect with the sleep or stress management issues.

Another they should have mentioned is...stop using all those antibacterial soaps and house cleaners. According to the CDC those are the reason hospitals are a breading ground for the super staph infections that you hear about people getting. Read more here.
