Your Kid Swallowed What?

The weird—and unfortunately dangerous—things kids pop into their mouths.

Gum
Gum is not for babies or toddlers, says Smith, but if your child has gum in her mouth, or has swallowed gum, she's probably okay. "Gum is non-toxic," says Smith. "The thing we worry about more is choking. Gum can conform to and block an airway. Most of the time when kids are ingesting things, there is a swallow reflex that will take that gum down the esophagus." If gum is swallowed, it doesn't stay in your stomach for years and years, as many of us were told when we were growing up. "Gum should pass through the digestive system, just like anything else," says Smith.

When my daughter was three, my husband and I watched her pick up a kidney bean and Stuff it up her nose.  She did this so fast that I was still in mid sentence "Cora Don't you put that up..." too late.  jeez kid... So I calmly tell her to blow out.  She sucks in and it went further up...Oh good grief.  I tell her again to blow and again she sucks in.  Well okay then, off we go the the emergency room.  I am faily calm because I am thinking she isn't the first kid to do this and won't be the last.  When the Dr came in he has decided that he is going to sedate her just alittle and is going to try to pull it out of her nose with forcepts.  Hmmm?  He then says if he can't get it that he will have to knock her all the way out and push the bean down into her stomach...What?  Now it isn't so funny and I am starting to panick along with my three year old.  It is then that a nurse came in and tells us that she had a nephew who had just done the same thing the weekend before and she knows how to get it out.   She tells me to plug the other nostril and blow in her mouth.  What?  She repeat it and so I try and I plug her nose and blow in her mouth sort of like doing CPR. I didn't blow hard enough the first time but I did it again and out it popped.  I couldn't believe it.  I have shared this story with every mom I know and many of them have used the method.  It worksSmile

When I was 6, I swallowed a dime. I took 10 years to "pass" and when it did it was only worth 5 cents! Open-mouthedSadSadSadSmileSmile

My ADD son swallowed 2 pennies when he was 2.  My surgeon friend told me to follow him around until he made change!!!! Eventually he did.  He stuck a bean in his nose that had to be pried out with forceps.  My kids were always doing crazy things, some that did not involve eating things.  When he was 8, he and his sister were watching a video;  we told them we were going into the garden to get some tomatoes  but he wasn't paying attention.  In a few minutes he realized we were not in the house and he couldn't "find" us , so he called the police and told them we had gone off and left them! The chief of police, who was our friend, drove out to check on the abandoned children.  My son drank a small bottle of tabasco on a dare in the 7th grade.  In college he was sitting on the frat house porch one nite, drinking a beer with the brothers, and a tiny moth flew into his ear!  He had to go to the emergency room and have it removed.  He said the fluttering was maddening.  He is now a successful businessman.

My daughter climbed way up to the top shelf of her bathroom cabinets and ate floride pills when she was 2.  When the new lab puppy pooped behind the sofa she found it first and though it was pretty tasty.  She got her head stuck in the rail of one of the cages at the zoo.  She also tried to smoke a cinnamon stick when she was 7, which caused an awful rash.  She was ADHD and quite the challenge--the poison control center got to where they knew her name.   She is grown and an attorney now. HAHA

One thing I saw did not involve my children.  I had to put a 12 or so yr. old kid to sleep one day so that the doctor could dig an impaction out of his lower colon/rectum. He had just started Babe Ruth baseball & had been playing in a baseball game and eating sunflower seeds like the bigger boys but didn't know he was supposed to spit out the hulls. A few days later they had swelled with moisture and turned into this big mass that he couldn't pass, even with laxatives and an enema.  He was so embarassed and quite in pain as well.

My son is A.d.h.d., Bi-polar and Mod. Mentally challenged.

He has swallowed, a balloon (no air), a bingo chip, (it had to be pushed out in the or),  penny,  special Olympics coin (about the size of a half dollar, took a trip from Meijer's in the ambulance). Put legos where they don't belong. Drank calamine lotion and has done some other crazy things.

My son was 2 years old... one day, I found him playing with half of a slug. When I couldn't find the other half, I knew he must have ate it... being a new mom and not knowing much about slugs, I rushed him to our pediatrician. The doctor told me not to worry... slugs are mostly protein and water and is actually a delicacy in some countries. I guess my son didn't like the taste of the slug since he only ate half...

I remember my dad was watching my little cousin when he was about 2, I was 8 or 9. We were all in the living room watching TV and he slowly crept away to the corner of the room to the other side of the couch. I noticed he was really quiet so I slowly went over to check on him. As I got closer I noticed him hiding something behind his back and he had brown stuff around his mouth. He was eating his own poop!!!Sick SickSickand he was squeezing it in his hands! SickSickSickI squirmed and screamed for my dad, I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to touch him and I sure as heck didn't want him touching me. I know its normal for toddlers to distance themselves when they have to poop, but he was taking too long and he would get agitated if you came near him. He also use to eat butter and spoonfuls of sugar. I've gota call him later to remind him about this lol!

SadFolgers4Ever.....it is a well known fact that once children get around bleach or any other liquid "nasties" and get just one gulp (just one) often their throats go into spasm and they continue to swallow. Don't give ME that rap about it tasting nasty. I knew a child (not mine) who drank a FULL cup of bleach and it nearly killed her. WATCH YOUR CHILDREN AROUND CHEMICALS.
