The short answer to this question is—drum roll, please—yes. They really do. While studies are ongoing, and in many cases experts still don't know exactly how these superfoods work, there's strong evidence that certain fruits and vegetables rich in plant-based nutrients can both prevent tumors from starting and halt their growth. Here, the top foods to work into the family diet if you'd like to cut cancer risk or help those with cancer recover. And who wouldn't?

The rich, dark colors of blueberries, Brazilian açai berries, raspberries and cranberries come from phytochemicals that protect against numerous types of cancer. Most recently, researchers at the University of Florida found that the active ingredient in açai berries destroyed cancer cells when tested in cell cultures. And blueberries and muscadine grapes contain compounds that recent research shows cause cancer cells in the liver to self-destruct. In studies particularly important to women, cranberries have recently been discovered to be an important weapon in the fight against deadly ovarian cancer. Studies reported at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society found that ovarian cancer cells that were becoming resistant to platinum chemotherapy—the standard of care for ovarian cancer—became six times more sensitive when exposed to a compound in cranberries.

The anti-cancer properties of all these berries are so strong that researchers have developing concentrated supplements and other products such as purees and concentrates.

      When are people going to wake up and realize that the way to be healthy and prevent nearly all disease is to simply eat lots of delicious and nourishing fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, and stop eating all the over processed, overcooked garbage that makes up 95% of the normal American diet?  How many studies reporting the health benefits of plant based foods and supplements, or the negative effects of cooked meat, pasteurized diary products, eggs, white flour and refined sugar does it take for a person to put two and two together?  Have you ever seen a study reporting the anti-cancer properties of hamburger meat?  How about the anti-aging properties of cheese, or the regenerative effects of chocolate chip cookies?  NO!  I don't think so, except for possibly the recent studies suggesting chocolate as a healthy source of antioxidants, which is complete B.S. because while chocolate may contain antioxidants, it also contains harmful acids, sugar, and caffeine, and there are many other healthier sources of antioxidants, namely FRUITS AND VEGETABLES!  

     The truth is we are a nation addicted to junk food, and we pay a heavy price in the form of physical and mental disease, lack of spiritual fulfillment, and shortened lifespan.  Don't wait for the FDA (f***ing Dipsh** Association) to tell you how to cure yourself of disease with food!  That could take another 100 years!  Educate yourself with independent information from objective, unbiased scientists and medical professionals, as well as testimonials from naturopathic practitioners and there patients who have nothing to gain financially from their stories.  I personally have cured myself of many ailments including asthma, allergies, bronchitis, common cold, chronic fatigue, back pain, and even depression without visiting any doctors, but instead using nothing but a 80-90% raw plant food diet, regular exercise, and good ol' fresh air.  (The other 10-20% of my diet is cooked vegetables, whole grains, and small amounts of chicken, turkey, or fish.  NO DIARY. You know...allergies.  The diary allergies don't seem to go away. Who cares? Just don't eat them.  They're not good for us anyway.  But what about calcium, you say?  Don't worry about it!  There is tons of calcium and other minerals in... that's right, you guessed it... fruits and vegetables!)

     Nature's medicine is way more effective than doctor's drugs, and way cheaper too!  It just takes some time and persistence to overcome addictions and get through the inevitable cleansing symptoms that come with improving your diet, but the rewards are SERIOUSLY worth it.  It's funny that we find it so easy to give in to the temptation of unhealthy food when the price is so great, yet we find it so difficult to resist that temptation when the reward is equally as great.  This can only be because we are not usually in a state of awareness of the consequences of our actions, for if we were, the decision to eat healthy, indeed every decision in life, would be much easier!  So pick up some books about natural cleansing and healing at your local health food store and check out websites on the subject, get into the 21st century LOGIC OF LIFE, get high on raw plant food, sunlight, and fresh air, and most importantly, HEAL THYSELF.

These studies of superfoods have really changed my life. I have been a type II diabetic for about Three years,I could not keep my A1C level below 9.4. My acid reflux disease was out of control,on top of that I have high blood pressure.  I was introduced to a product called KYANI from a friend at work 9 months ago. This is an excellent submission of information...pretty much all foods can prevent cancer if you eat them free of chemicals, (pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, GMO's & etc.)basically Fresh, Organic and Grown Locally is your best bet. Additional good choices are Kale, Bok Choy, Coconut Oil, Free Range Grass Fed Beef, Wild Caught Salmon, Sweet Potatoes and etc.  Try to avoid overcooking the veggies and fruits, and enjoying them raw during the warm summer months for additional enzymes. Another type of food that our ancestors relied heavily upon are fermented foods like Sauerkraut, Beet Kvass and Kimchee (just to name a few).   Fermented foods without sugar, provide additional probiotics and digest much easier. 

No one food is the MAGIC BULLET, we need a variety of colorful foods foods that provide an assortment of building blocks for the body (fat, protein and carbs). SO be careful of the multi-level marketing products with the wild claims!

i am very sensitive to broccoli and cabbage.  they are gasy for me.  have to watch that because of heaet problems.  is broccli as bad as cabbage in that way?  is it listed any where the side effects.  thank you

How much money is donated to various cancer research that does not include diet. it seems that unless there is a substantial profit margin there no substantial action. Greed is killing us all.

I am diagnosed with stage three non small cell lung cancer ,I also suffer from intermittent bowel obstructions therefore it is hard for me to eat most of the foods that I have been told to eat. I must say that almost none of the foods on you list were recommended to me. So thank you very much for giving me choices that not only I like but , also items that my system can digest without causing me acute pain, Again thank you.
