Gardens

Plants, with their constant cycles of renewal and growth, can inspire and distract us during times of need. Swedish researchers found that patients in a rehabilitation facility who were exposed to a healing garden showed emotional, cognitive and motor function improvement. Even views of a garden can reduce stress experienced by the ill and infirm. Another study found that postsurgical patients in rooms with a view of trees had a shorter hospital stay and required fewer pain medications than patients whose windows faced a brick wall. The bottom line: improve mood and speed healing by harnessing the power of green.
