If you live in Miami, you're probably in serious debt. The creditor? Your body. See, according to our calculations, you may owe a staggering amount of sleep. And you're dealing with the worst kind of loan shark, one that can't be put off with promises. Frankly, if you don't settle up soon, you could pay with your life.

Consider this your statistical wake-up call. We tapped Experian Consumer Research for the percentage of people who say they sleep seven hours or less every night, the percentage who snore or have sleep apnea (a shut-eye killer for the snorer and the snorer's partner), the percentage who report chronic insomnia, and the percentage who pop prescription sleeping pills. We also factored in data from SimplyMap on those who take nonprescription pills. And finally, since TV is every insomniac's best friend, we asked the Nielsen Company who's holding the remote from midnight to 4 a.m.

Institute a gag order

You can tell how noisy the world has become just by looking at the bags under everyone's eyes: A National Sleep Foundation survey found that one in three people are frequently startled awake, most often by noise. Maybe that's why Boulder, Colo., has banned heavy construction equipment after 9:00 p.m., and a New York City law allows the NYPD to disconnect car alarms that don't shut off. Visit nonoise.org/lawlib/cities/cities.htm for a list of existing noise ordinances. If your city has a law on the books, read up on it and file a complaint when someone raises a racket. If there aren't any ordinances, petition the city council.

Music Rx

Can't sleep? Try a Liszt lullaby. Hungarian researchers found that people who listened to slow-paced classical music for 45 minutes before bedtime slept better and felt more alert the next day. Tunes that run 40 to 70 beats a minute can lower your BP and heart rate enough to help you slumber.
