Q: What is the best time to take a blood pressure medication — in the morning or before bed?

A: Most people's blood pressure is slightly lower at night than during the day (by about 10 points on average). In general, it makes the most sense to take your blood pressure medication in the morning so that it will be in effect when your blood pressure is naturally higher. Although most blood pressure drugs are used once per day, quite a few require multiple doses per day. In these cases, take them on the schedule your doctor gives you.

Some people experience fatigue or sleepiness as a side effect of blood pressure medications. In this case, doctors will sometimes suggest taking the medication before bed. If you are considering this switch, talk to your doctor first. Always tell your doctor about any side effects before changing how you take your medications.
