10 Foods Tough to Digest

Fried chicken nuggets

Anytime you take a food, dip it in batter and then deep fry it, you turn it into something that can be a bit hard on the gut. Fried foods inevitably are greasy and high in fat, both of which spell trouble for the stomach. If you already suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, greasy foods are especially problematic and can cause symptoms like nausea and diarrhea, says Tara Gidus, a dietitian in Orlando, Fla. To make a healthier version, take frozen chicken nuggets (or use your own breadcrumb batter on chicken breasts) and bake them, rather than fry.

The advice to forgo fried for flavorful alternatives is also helpful for other traditionally greasy snacks, like potato chips. To get the crunchy, salty sensation of chips without the unfortunate side effects, look for baked versions of potato chips or switch to low- or no-fat snacks like pretzels, air-popped popcorn or soy crisps.

As a long term sufferer of gastrointestinal problems I feel that I have at least one piece of advice to offer.

First and foremost is to ignore the foolish people on this commenting board that say I started taking "X" drug now for "X" years and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want. This is simply the worst, uninformed advice you could ever get from anyone.

If your body is telling you not to eat certain foods, and you force it to accept these foods again on a regular basis for long term, I can guarantee you it may not be today, tomorrow, or the next day you will develop other systemic gastrointestinal problems which may not be so easy to diagnose, and you may end up going under the knife to fix something that could have been properly maintained by change of diet, lifestyle, etc.

Taking drugs so you can still eat chocolate everyday is a fools errand. Work with your doctor, hire a nutritionist, eat healthy, get exercise, and learn to enjoy your comfort foods in moderation. Instead of having chocolate everyday, have it once a week as a treat.

Everyone that has digestive disorders should first do an elimination diet, use a journal to take notes on how bloated you feel, if you are having proper regular bowel movements, etc. Slowly reintroduce one new food to your diet on 4-5 day rotating  basis. Keeping regular journal notes on how you are feeling after each meal. Isolate the things that make you feel less than your best. Find out what foods you eat that could use help from digestive aids such as Beano, Digestive Enzymes. Take Probiotics on a regular basis, after every meal. Get lots of fiber in your diet. Reduce your bad fats and increase your goods fats such as flax seed oil etc.

Do these things, all of them before you get a false sense of security from a band aid solution such as taking proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers, etc. These drugs have an important purpose such as recovering from stomach intestinal lesions such as aiding in the curing of certain types of ulcers, acid reflux etc. For those of you that take proton pump inhibitors I highly recommend you study for your self what proton pump inhibitors do to your body and ask yourself, "Taking these everyday so I can still drink coffee everyday, is it worth the risk?" If quitting coffee, etc. will reduce\eliminate your acid reflux ask yourself what is the wiser choice for a long healthy life? Again if you have acid reflux and there is damage to the esophagus then proton pump inhibitors are a incredible gift from science to aid in your healing and recovery.

To take these drugs long term without lifestyle change is again just plain bloody foolish. Just so you can continue living the lifestyle that led you to these problems in the first place will only lead you to a place of misery that I can tell you from experience is a place you want to avoid.

Living a healthy fulfilling life can be had without chocolate, ice cream, coffee, fried chicken, etc.  Believe me.

Good health and moderation to you all.

I've been taking Prilosec, prescription strength for several years and seem to do pretty well. I eat what I want, when I want. Of course a lot of the foods that supposedly cause stomach acid I wouldn't eat anyway. I love chocolate in any form.

By the way, you need to watch what you say on this board! The " Comment Police " watch it closely.

If you mix fruit or fruit juice with cereal or bread it actually ferments and creates alcohol and

gas. You are better taking fruit juice and fruit by itself. That is why people who fast and just eat fruit and drink fruit juice look so good after a few days.

heres a good way to 'cure' your lactose intollerance:  drink raw whole milk.  milk naturally contains lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose) but heres the rub..pasteurization inactivates lactase.  i switched to raw milk recently and have absolutely no intolerance issues.  if youre interested in raw milk, there are some very informative websites out there.  oh, by the way, there are numerous other health benefits of raw milk to 'cooked' milk..look it up!!

The bit about the oj in the morning is bull. Fresh oj is slightly alkaline and is best ingested on an empty stomach, but with no other foods.  I have suffered with major heartburn for years with hiatal hernia and have been on many meds. Now I take nothing, and feel great. Just eat the right foods at the right time. Want more info?

e-mail me at kormi20@hotmail.com.

Unreal.........I have large glass of OJ first thing every morning and my stomach is always a mess. I thought it couldn't be the OJ since it's supposed to be so good for me.
