Martica Heaner, Ph.D., M.A., M.Ed., is a Manhattan-based exercise physiologist and nutritionist, and an award-winning fitness instructor and health writer. She has a Ph.D. in behavioral nutrition and physical activity from Columbia University, an M.A. in applied physiology and an M.Ed. in nutrition, both from Columbia University, and a B.A. from Smith College in English and exercise science. She is also a NASM-certified personal trainer and teaches group-fitness classes including Spinning, body sculpting and aerobics at NYSC in New York City.

Heaner has written for a variety of publications including Prevention, Shape, More, Health, The New York Times, Family Circle, Glamour, Redbook, Cooking Light, Men's Health and others. She has worked as an editor for magazines including GQ, Fitness and Glamour. Martica was given a journalism award in 2008 for Media Orthopedic Reporting Excellence by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons for an article on bone health that she wrote for Family Circle magazine, and she is the author of eight books published internationally, including Cross-Training for Dummies and Lean Mommy.

During an extended period living in London, Heaner helped to develop the British fitness industry. She trained fitness trainers at fitness conventions  throughout the U.K. and Europe and starred in five fitness videos and two British TV fitness series, including "BodyHeat" on L!VE TV, shown daily in the U.K. She was awarded National Fitness Leader of the Year in 1991 by Fitness Professionals, Europe's leading association for fitness trainers, and was nominated for an Excellence in Achievement award by the Exercise Association of England. Martica was the 1989 UK Sport-Aerobics Silver Medalist and was a cheerleader for NFL-Europe.

Heaner has been a regular fitness and nutrition expert on CNN and has appeared on other news shows including "The CBS Early Show" and NBC's "Weekend Today."

I chose to lose weight before I started excercising by the old ways...watch calories, count carbs, whatever works for you....It's easy when you're way overweight.  Best decision I have ever made.  My feet are 80% better, and I can walk without misery...not without pain, but without misery.
