Alzheimer's Disease

The cause of Alzheimer's disease is not clear, and it is likely there are several causes of this condition. Alzheimer's disease causes changes or deterioration in certain areas of the brain that control thinking, communication, and behavior. Some of the deterioration may be related to a loss of chemical messengers in the brain (neurotransmitters)—acetylcholine, in particular—that allow nerve cells in the brain to communicate properly.

It is not clear why these changes in the brain occur, but they are a major focus of Alzheimer's research. Although most people who have Alzheimer's disease do not have a family history of the condition, you are at increased risk for the condition if a member of your family has it.

Some theories have suggested that metals, such as zinc or aluminum, play a role in Alzheimer's disease. But research has not found much evidence to support these theories. Experts agree that there is no reason to leave zinc out of your diet or to avoid items that contain aluminum, such as cooking utensils or soda pop cans.

Mom has alzheimer's and in the morning when she wakes up she acts like she is a child sometimes and  I am the mother, complete with her saying yes mamm to me. In the evening after sundown, the nurse told me they go through a phase called twilight. She can become aggressive, combative, paranoid and hallucinate. She is on medications but, if she is acting normal I skip her night meds, which is for her behavior and sleep. We do not want her drugged, but we make sure she gets her daytime medicines, or you will wish you had remembered to give them to her. I just thank the Lord for the time he is allowing me to be with her, knowing her condition will deteriorate more as time goes' on is heartbreaking, but durable. She is my mom and I will take care of her for the rest of her life in one form or another. Remember mom raised you, and wiped your butt, tears and dirty face. Time to give back!

Bless you for making your mother a priority!!! As for the disease itself...there are tests to find out if you carry the gene...

As for yourself....are there adult centres for Alzheihmers patients in your area? Day centres I mean were mom could go to be with peers and do activities for a few hours...that would free you for a few hours to do some of the things you enjoy and at the same time your mom would be  safe....and would save some wear and tear out of both of you...

Have courage but do not be afraid to ask for help!!!! even if means just having personal company for a few hours...little gifts that enhanc your everyday experience !!!
