Get off the elliptical trainer.

"The elliptical is mindless and by far the least effective machine for fat loss," says L.A.–based Torri Shack, who's certified by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. "It uses momentum, not muscle force. Most people don't use enough resistance." This machine may increase your heart rate and sweat level, but to burn fat using one, Shack says you'll need to exercise for 45 to 60 minutes and vary your levels of intensity and resistance. Shack adds that the elliptical machine is best for warming up before weight lifting or rehabilitating injured body parts. "If you can watch television or read while doing cardio, you're not working hard enough, and therefore not burning fat," she says.

I need #8 and #6 is hard to do.  So those two will be added to my routine.  And this is from someone who has worked out fairly consistently for 49 years (14 to 63).

I grew up going barefooted most of the summer and ran barefooted and my feet were so flat the Navy nearly rejected me!  By the time I got through bootcamp, however, I had lost all the tough skin from the bottom of my feet from standing in water all day for a week.  Now I can't go barefooted because it hurts too much.

I like to work out  in my thong and without shoes-at home of course. My bowflex revolution is just enough for what I need to do. But working in the back yard-caring bags of dirt and mulch, cut trees etc. will make you sweat a lot too.

You can stretch well in the bed in the morning before getting up.

RPE scale is 6-20, not 1-10...it relfects heart rate which can be as low as 60, to as high as 200 and is the best way, short of a heart rate monitor, and determining heart rate during exercise.

Personally, I love my Wii Fit.  Where I live the least expensive gym (that wasn't filthy!) was upwards of $80 a month, so my Wii Fit payed for itself in three months AND gives me a better workout than the machines at the gym.  Plus, the fact that it's a game and keeps score is a great motivational factor.  I keep trying to outdo myself every time, hence I push a little harder and get an even better workout.  I know there are naysayers who will say that a video game system can't possibly help get you in shape, but I've seen the results and I can honestly say it can and does!  Anything that gets you moving for 30-60 minutes a day can't be bad, right?  That's the main reason Americans are out of shape, overweight, and generally unhealthy compared to people in a lot of other countries.  We don't move our bodies enough!  Granted, it's not entirely our fault; lenghty commutes, crazy work hours, lack of amenities within a convenient walking distance, etc. all contribute.  But if we move around more, we'll all feel better.

A friend of mine once said while we were watching people jogging over the 13th St. bridge in Washington D.C. at lunchtime, 'they are all continually jogging so that they will live longer to continue jogging'.

Now I hope few are offended by this, but, in my opinion, there is a certain moral to this.

Why not do useful work while exercising?  Why not mow a strenuous lawn, use 'hand-tools' to chop hedges, saw tree limbs that need it, etc.?

I find that most 'active' people these days---------hire folks to do the 'work' while they go out 'jogging' or 'pump' their favorite cycle machine.

Just a suggestion.
