Q. Does muscle really weigh more than fat? I am a trainer and am frequently asked this question by members of my gym. I have heard conflicting reports and can’t seem to find the right answer.

A. No, muscle does not weigh more than fat. A pound of muscle weighs exactly the same as a pound of fat—they both weigh one pound!

This commonly cited gym cliché is somewhat misunderstood and misused. The rationale that muscle weighs more than fat is often cited as an explanation for why a person might find that they aren’t losing weight, or are gaining weight, when they kick off an exercise regimen. The idea seems to be that if you are exercising—and theoretically losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time—the effects cancel each other out. So, in theory, you won’t see desired weight loss as measured by pounds on the scale, even though you may be improving how you look.

You certainly can improve your appearance with exercise without always seeing a change in your body weight—by becoming firmer, more sculpted and sometimes leaner. But that doesn’t mean that you are gaining massive amounts of muscle, or losing lots of fat.

Muscle Does Not Turn To Fat

Some people believe that if they start working out they turn their fat into muscle or that, if they stop working out, their muscle will turn into fat. Neither is true; each tissue is distinctly different. You can gain muscle or lose weight, and you can gain or lose more body fat, but they don’t convert into each other. Both gaining and losing muscle and/or fat can both affect your body weight on the scale, depending upon the magnitude of the body fat or body muscle increase or decrease.

To gain significant amounts of muscle, you not only have to do the type of exercise that stimulates muscle growth—progressive and intense resistance training—you also have to eat more calories than normal to fuel the process. Most people who exercise, especially women, do not perform resistance training at this level, nor do they eat more to try to build muscle. Even if they did, it could take many months to increase muscle mass by just a few pounds.

Body Fat Tests

Some people get their body fat tested at the gym, either by using skin calipers or a portable, step-on, body-fat scale. These measurements may show shifts in muscle-to-fat ratios, making it appear that a person has gained pounds of muscle and lost pounds worth of fat, whether or not the normal body-weight scale registers any big changes. Whether these potentially large changes in fat and muscle mass are accurate is up for debate.

On the body-fat scale, for example, you can get a dramatically different estimate of these figures from the same “weigh-in” based on whether you are input as a “normal” person or an “athlete.” So at the exact same moment a scale may show that you are at 18 percent body fat or at 27 percent body fat, for example. This large discrepancy is because the formulas used in these types of machines to calculate your measurements are based on estimates.

And there’s always a “standard deviation” in these estimated readings from calipers and body-fat scales. In other words, your result may not be as specific as you think it is, it falls within a range.

Why Doesn’t Exercise Always Affect Body Weight?

If someone is working out and not losing weight, or not losing as much as they want—or if they’re actually gaining weight—the first place to look is the type and amount of exercise.

Weight loss boils down to burning more calories than you normally use in a day. Cardio exercise burns more calories than muscle-toning or the average resistance-training workout. So dialing down the stretching and core work to just once or twice a week, and replacing it with more cardio should produce more weight loss. And the more minutes the better when it comes to weight loss: An hour to 90 minutes of aerobic activity per day on most days of the week will affect body weight.

Some people get overly obsessed about numbers on the scale. If you are happy with the way you look and feel, and you feel like you are improving your fitness and strength, then continue doing what you are doing. Exercise works, and every minute of movement helps your health in some way. Weight loss through working out may be slower than you want, but it’s likely to be longer term solution and a healthier way to trim down and shape up, or at the very least to stave off weight gain over the years.

DOES MUSCLE WEIGH MORE THAN FAT  ?!?!

Hi, i understand that a pound of muscle is the same as a pound of fat !!! ..... but if you filled an empty container full of fat and then filled the same size container full of muscle is there a difference in weight ??????

Most of the sites that address this issue (and claim to be experts or at least knowledgeable in weight loss and health) say the same thing. "5 pounds of fat weighs the same as 5 pounds of muscle."

Basically it's a misnomer. Or at least it's seen as such.

What people really mean is that a square foot of fat and a square foot of muscle don't weigh the same. The muscle will weigh more.

So therefore if you lose two inches of body mass you could end up weighing the same because there's less fat, but possibly more muscle.

I'm wondering how all these "experts" can not possibly understand this and us lowly readers have no trouble with it.

Muscle DOES weigh more than fat (which is why I say above that it's taken as a misnomer, when it really isn't.) Just like a brick weighs more than a feather (as one commenter mentioned in a round about way above.) If you took a bunch of feathers that together equaled the size of a brick, the brick would still weigh more, yet when someone says a brick weighs more than a feather, no one is confused by that. This is the same situation. (This particular paragraph is directed at Furious432 who is apparently "furious" at the people who can't understand the question when he/she doesn't seem to understand the question.)

To me, this has to be true because 4 years ago I weighed 150 pounds, but then I went on a diet and started exercising regularly and lost about 15 pounds. Then I kind of gave up and eventually I gained back the weight, but I looked WAY better than I was before because some of that weight was muscle, so I was actually thinner than before.

Muscle is more dense, so it weights more (according to the same in volume(not weight)) than fat. Pretty easy to understand. This article is wrong tough.

The question "Does muscle weigh more than fat?" says nothing about an equal weight of muscle and fat and then asking which one is heavier...

You can say yes because when given the same volumes, the muscle does indeed weigh more since it obviously has a higher density. I'm pretty sure everyone asking this question is referring to it in this way, so it's kinda stupid and annoying to say no, since you're just being critical on word usage. You know what a person means so just answer it in the way they want to know. It's pretty silly how you answer no and then begin to explain that muscle is heavier.

Think about it. If someone asks you, I dunno, something like "Does iron weigh more than aluminum?" would you actually say no? lol I guess you would if you are bored and want to start a lecture on densities. Do you really think the asker is wondering if a pound of iron weighs more than a pound of aluminum? No, because that question is pointless and answers itself. Yeah, the original question may be vague and not properly worded, but c'mon, you know what it means, stop being THAT person who is overly-technical on whatever a person says.

Most people are probably just going to go to this website, scroll down to the answer ("No") and then exit out and therefore will probably think that muscle has the same density as fat...

But yeah they are both correct, it's just that saying no seems to be a lot more misleading in my mind.

Actually, the trainer and MrFurry are both right! It is true that one pound of muscle weighs the same as one pound of fat, however because muscle tissue is bound tighter than fat tissue, (sorry I thought cubic foot was a little excessive) a cubic inch of fat takes up the same amount of space as a cubic inch of muscle but because of the thickness, solidity, or whatever term your hearts desire, of muscle, a cubic inch of muscle will weigh more than a cubic inch of fat because instead of measuring just weight, you're adding another variable and that is the restriction of both tissues taking up the same area of space, hence why a fat person at 250 looks a lot bigger than a muscular person at 250. I hope that this helps clear things up for you.

No, you are incorrect.  The question was plain and simple - does muscle weight more than fat?  Pound per pound, it does not weight anymore than fat.  Get a life, and read first before you comment.

Stupidest glib non-answer in a long time. Question is whether muscle weighs more than fat. Idiot 'expert' states, no, a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, which has nothing to do with the question.

How about a cubic foot of muscle tissue  compared to a cubic foot of fat tissue? I bet you find muscle does weigh more than fat, which was the trainers original question. And something a lot of people wonder or have heard.

You could then go on to explain how that might not be an accurate measure of fitness or whatever point you want to make with your article, but at least answer the question you are purporting to answer.
