This interactive tool estimates how many calories are burned during common activities. The food you eat is measured in calories. The energy you use every day is also measured in calories. You are using energy all the time, even at rest. The more vigorous the activity and the longer the time you do it, the more calories you burn.

This tool also uses your weight to calculate calories burned, because a heavier person burns more calories during activity than a lighter person.

I love the tool but I want to account for muscles used when walking vs bikeing. I am very used to bicycling everywhere but can barely walk half a mile. I can bike for hours but walking kills me. What's the diff?

I like the interactive health calorie burned tool.  But it would probably help out alot of people if they were to add more exercises to it that people do such as Aerobics, etc.

A most useful tool, note that 45 min of vigorous exercise burns up 499 food or BIG CALORIES- each is equivalent to 1,000 standard physics calories. And so we can use either 499 Calories or 499,000 calories burned-your choice!

yes i agree so for the first time in my life i am on a diet. I eat healthy normally but that didn't help me to not gain weight uncontrollably. So now I am on a strick low calorie diet and try to get extra exercise everyday and I am actually loosing weight. I am thrilled and just hope it continues, my face is starting to look like myself again lol.

I agree with slowing down when you eat.  I have a tendency to eat very quickly so I can get back to work or activities.  It seems that no matter how many times you workout per week, at a certain age you tend to gain weight.  Does anyone else have this problem?

check out buying the body bug for the most accurate reading of calorie burn and food tracking. Its a great way to learn about making good food choices for your own personal goal, loosing weight, gaining muscle, conditioning etc.  It really taked the guess work out of calculating cal in and cal out for those needing to loose weight.

NataG, you're reading that wrong.  It's not miles/hour, it's how many minutes it takes you to accomplish one mile.  If it takes you only 8 minutes, your speed is faster than if it takes you longer, like 12 minutes.  It's basically a measure of pace per mile, not speed which is distance per hour.

I also have a low thyroid.  It is harder to lose weight but it is possible.  I have managed to keep my weight under 130.  I have a hard time digesting raw vegetables and never thought it was related to throid.  Interesting...

Well...I'm kinda confused-it seems according to this calculator that when the running speed is higher the burning process goes down??? It shows than when i run 9miles/hour i burn more call than when i run12...

Ti90 - I have to disagree with you.  You cannot make blanket statements.  I wish just eating healthy overall and exercising did it for me but this is not the case.  I have an underactive thyroid (Hashimoto's) and it is the most frustrating disease.  Most women I meet with this disease are either overweight from 15 pounds to obese or grossly underweight.  It's however your body reacts.  I eat healthy with few slip ups, exercise daily for an hour at least, and still am gaining weight.  Salads are not as good for those with thyroid problems and just learned recently that raw vegetables are not as easily dissolved in the body nor absorbed so veges should be cooked.  So perhaps this will help me.
